Peoria Street, north of Monaco. |
Peoria Street, north of Monaco, was a great place to catch some rays and photograph planes landing at Stapleton International Airport, Denver. Here a woman photographer prepares to shoot an airplane on short final. The runway threshold was about 200 feet behind her, to the left. At this point, the planes had full flaps, slats, and landing gear deployed. The sound of the wingtip vortices made the chain-link fence "sing" as they swirled past. There were two runways with staggered thresholds. These pictures were taken in 1980.

Note the older, low-bypass jet engines with a relatively small intake diameter compared to later engines that were high-bypass to suck in more air to increase thrust and reduce noise.

United Airlines 727 on missed approach. |
United Airlines 727 on missed approach at Stapleton Airport, Denver, 1980, probably due to separation issues with an aircraft ahead. Note that gear is up and flaps and slats (on the leading edge of the wings) have been raised to the takeoff position for maximum lift and minimum drag for the required takeoff speed.
