Aurora Airport was previously known as East Colfax Airport and Columbine Airport (not to be confused with Columbine Airport southwest of Denver. It was located on I70, east of Denver, at Airport Road.
This view toward the northwest shows the airport runway slightly left of center as the dim line running at an angle toward the I70 intersection with Airport Road. At the right of the runway is where aircraft were tied down.
It is presumed that the I70 exit was built for local traffic including that for the mobile home park at the upper left of the picture, on the south side of I70.
The oval at the upper right of the picture is a test track that was used by Otis Elevator for testing its vehicles for moving passengers between airport terminals such as the one at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas.
Colfax Avenue, the longest city street in America, is to the north of I70 and intersects the I70 frontage road at the right of the picture.
When the Denver International Airport (DIA) was opened in 1992 to replace Stapleton Airport, airplanes operating at Aurora Airport had to stay south of I70 which required flying tight pattern when taking off to the north or landing to the south. Landing on the north end of the runway, and staying south of I70, sometimes required pilots to slip the aircraft with flaps to descend quickly to the runway threshold.
Aurora Airport was closed and bulldozed sometime around the Millennium.
