Edward Henry Heinemann (1908-1991) became Chief Engineer at Douglas' El Segundo division in 1937. Over the next two decades, he designed many of the most famous Douglas military aircraft. Among them are:
  • A-20 Havoc (World War II)
  • A-26 Invader (World War II)
  • SBD Dauntless dive bomber (World War II)
  • AD Skyraider (Vietnam)
  • A-4 Skyhawk (Vietnam)
  • F4D Skyray (Vietnam)


Heinemann won the 1953 Collier Trophy, awarded for the year's most significant contribution to aviation, for the design of the F4D Skyray carrier fighter. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1981 for his outstanding contributions to military aviation.
