Aeronautical engineer Lloyd Carlton Stearman worked for many aircraft companies early in his career:
  • Laird Airplane Company
  • Swallow Aircraft Company
  • Travel Air Manufacturing

He established his own company in Venice, California in 1926. Stearman Aircraft with the C-series of biplanes, became a direct competitor with Stearman's employer - Travel Air. He not only designed the planes and supervised their construction, he also served as the company's test pilot.
