New designs that push traditional approaches often have "bugs" that need to be worked out. The 787 was no exception. However, once the problems were solved, the airplane became an outstanding success.

Jan. 7A Japan Airlines (JAL) 787 caught fire while on the ground at Boston's Logan Airport due to fire in lithium-ion battery compartment.
Jan. 8Another JAL 787 flight from Boston to Tokyo was grounded after a fuel spill. This does not appear to have been the fault of the aircraft.
Jan. 9A Japan All Nippon Airways (ANA) canceled a domestic 787 flight within Japan due to a brake issue.
Jan. 16An ANA 787 made an emergency landing in Japan due to smoke in the cockpit.
Jan. 16The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded 787s for investigations.
Apr. 25The FAA lifted the 787 grounding, allowing all 787s to begin flying after the battery compartment fix on each plane was completed.
Jun. 11A JAL 787 headed for Singapore returned to Tokyo due to an issue with the anti-icing system.
Jun. 18A United Airlines (UA) 787 from Denver to Tokyo diverted to Seattle SEATAC Airport due to an oil filter indicator issue.
Jun. 20A UA 787 from London to Houston diverted to New York due to an oil filter indicator issue.
Jun. 23A UA 787 from Houston to Denver returned to Houston due to a brake indicator issue.
Jul. 9A UA flight from London to Houston was canceled due to a message indicator issue in the cockpit.
Jul. 12A Ethiopian Airlines 787 parked at Heathrow Airport in London with no passengers caught fire.
Jul. 12A Thomson Airways 787 returned to Manchester, England airport as a precaution for an uspecified mechanical issue.
