The Stanley brothers did not like to advertise, preferring to rely on word of mouth and race results to sell their
cars. In 1906, Stanley racer Fred Marriott was the first person to travel two miles a minute (120 miles per hour).
To keep the model easily recognizable, the "coffin-shaped" hood of the Stanley was retained despite consumer
preference for sleeker gasoline car designs.
Stanley was slow to incorporate a condenser to recycle steam, a common criticism of steam car owners who had to
replenish the water supply as often as every 20 miles.
