Seeking to look fresh against newer designed rivals for 1950, Studebaker gave its 1947 bodies a dramatic cowl-forward
facelift that was extremely controversial at the time.
According the designer Bob Bourke, "The New Bullet Nose" front was ordered by Loewy with the words, "Now, Bob, eet
has to look like zee aero plane." It did not take on the look of the airplane and had the most bizarre face of any
American car since the Graham's abortive 1939 and 1940 "Shark nose" models.
