The first car produced by the Ford Motor Company, in 1903, was the Model A, powered by an opposed, two-cylinder engine mounted beneath the body. It had a planetary transmission with two speeds forward and one reverse. The design of this power train was used through the Model F.

In 1904 Ford introduced Models B and C. The Model F replaced the Model C in 1905. The Model F was the last two-cylinder Ford. It was produced during 1905 and 1906. The 1905 Model F Tourer was priced at $2,000, and the two-seat runabout, of which this car is an example, sold for $1,000. At the time, the Ford Motor Company produced around eight percent of all cars built in the U.S.

In 1906 the Model F was replaced by Models N and K. When Model F production ended in 1906, about 1,000 have been manufactured. 7,000 Ford Model N’s were built between 1906 and 1908, selling for around $600, half the price of the Model F. The overpriced Model K was a poor seller.

The accession number for this Forney car is 6.
