The name "Essex" came about as follows: Two or three of the top Hudson executives studied a map of England, looking for a name with snob appeal. They found the name, "Essex," for their car. Essex was headed by R. S. McAneeny and Hudson.

Hudson left Essex to build a light car in 1918 because of his concern over increasing manufacturing costs. The Essex has a four-cylinder engine producing 55 hp. It has a sliding gear transmission and mechanical brakes on two wheels. In 1922, the Hudson Motor Car Company built both Essex and Hudson cars.
