In 1910 Harry C. Stutz had his own firm, the Stutz Auto Parts Company. The following year, within about five weeks, he built a car that he took to the Indianapolis 500 mile race. The first Stutz built was not a Bearcat, but the "Car that Made Good in a Day" at the Indy 500 in May of 1911.

Weeks later, the Ideal Motor Car Company began manufacturing the car.

It is believed that there are only two other Stutz fire engines in existence. These are more rare than the famous Stutz Bearcat. The Stutz Motor Car Company was liquidated in 1939.
