Online Medical Records

Online Medical Records

This information is from the August 2008 issue of Money.

Several online services allow a person to store is personal health records (PHR) in an online location.

Sites that allow storage of medical information include Google, WebMD, Microsoft, and others.

The person enters his or his children's health information, including vaccinations, health history, family history, prescriptions used, allergies, lab results, etc. online. Most doctors and pharmacies are not set up to send information to online sites like these, so it is up to the individual to enter the data.

When a person begins going to a medical professional, they can provide online access to their medical data by giving their uniform resource locator (URL) and password to the professional.

Eventually, the hope is that doctors will be able to send health information, including medical charts, to an online repository.

Questions remain regarding the security of the information and how it will be used by the medical community.
