The Peterson House was originally located in the Bear Creek Valley at what is now near S. Estes Street, south of Yale Avenue. It is
often called the Streer-Peterson House.
It was built from 1872 to 1885 by Levi and Eunice Debrust. The house, an L-shaped, two-story ballooned frame with a front gabled roof,
is of Gothic Revival architecture.
The Streer family lived in the house from 1918 to 1921 and operated the Morrison Farm Dairy. The Peterson family owned the house from
1939 to 1975 and operated the Lakewood Farm Dairy. Although they held title to the land on which the house was located, the Peterson
family never occupied the house. Two additions were made in the 20th Century.
The house sat empty for many years. When it was threatened by the Mount Carbon Dam Project, the Army Corps of Engineers purchased the
house in 1975. When the house was scheduled for demolition in 1986, the City of Lakewood purchased it and moved it to its current
location at 797 S. Wadsworth Boulevard in Belmar Village in the Lakewood Heritage Center. Although the approximate location of the house
is where 801 S. Yarrow Street would be if it ran through the Heritage Center, for fire district purposes, the address is 7840 W. Ohio
Avenue.
The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, as being representative of the farming and dairy history of
the Bear Creek area.
