|
Description of 1827 Wadsworth Boulevard, for picture above, July 5, 1937, transcribed, below. |
"7-5-37 - Photo 0040. The weeds grew as high as one's head here before being pulled to make way for new lawn. Figured roots would help improve dirt (hauled in from nearby road job).
Before Labor Day weekend, weeds were laboriously pulled.
9-4-37 - Grading operations on 1000 sq. ft. of lawn were started and finished. Some places were cut as much as one foot. Sandstone paving blocks were placed from the corner of the garage for about 25' of wall 18" high to reduce the lawn slope. That nite a young cloud burst undid some of the grading.
Next day, 7 yards of dirt were spread - all moved in from drive by hand because slope too wet to get truck up to better locations.
Next day (Labor Day - and how!) 3 yards of dirt (all this dirt is greenhouse dirt because fill dirt is too poor) spread, all rolled, then packed down better by walking, then raked, rolled, and raked and rolled. Then 12# of grass seed (2# annual rye & 10# Kentucky blue) sowed. All raked lightly. Then 1/2 yd mushroom dirt spread by hand (top dressing), all rolled again. Your favorite son did it all by himself.
9/13/37 - The rye grass has come up enough to give definite green tinge. Blue grass expected about Oct 1." [Written by Donald Arter Rittenhouse]

"7-5-37 - [1827 Wadsworth] Looking east along our south line from the southwest corner of our farm. The larger of the two poles at the right edge is about 10' east of our east line.
By careful looking you can see some corn in the foreground. One of the men who worked on our house had quite a vegetable plot there. We had corn, radishes, beets, turnips, and squash out of there.
Near the back garage is a pile of fence posts I cut and split from 30' cedar poles last spring. It looks now as tho we'll afford metal posts this winter instead.
Expect to put in some orchard next spring - and a few grape vines." [Written by Donald Arter Rittenhouse]

7-5-37 - "The one trick I consider my greatest accomplishment to date. I yawned once before this one (out htere in the grass) just to tease Dad - then I just sort of waited while he bent over me with at funny box. He mentioned something about getting tired - but that didn't worry me. So finally I yawned again (no one was entertaining me). Then Dad stated that it was worth the wait - of course it was!

"Taken 7-5-37 - [1827 Wadsworth] Building up garden at south end of porch. Hauled dirt approx. 75' up grade - cinders & sand.
N.B. 1/2 size load has been proven the most economical - can make more than twice as many trips with 1/2 size as with full size load with less tiring. Narrow wheel and soft track are contributing factors.
This "Irish" buggy has done noble duty around the place, and will do much more!" [Written by Donald Arter Rittenhouse]
