Toolbars
Menu toolbar
- The Menu toolbar is at the top of the screen with a descriptive word on each button.
Standard toolbar
- The Standard toolbar has icons and is below the Menu toolbar.
Formatting toolbar
- The Formatting toolbar shows formatting information and is below the Standard toolbar.
Title Bar
- The title bar is across the top of a document.
Task Bar
- The task bar is across the bottom of the screen. It has the Start button at the far left.
Select Toolbars
- To view and select toolbars, click View on the Menu toolbar; click Toolbars; click the toolbars you want to see. Those that are already in use
are shown with a checkmark to the left of them.

Personalizing Windows
Hiding the Taskbar
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Taskbar & Start Menu.
- Click Auto hide to place a checkmark in it.
- Click OK.
Unhiding the Taskbar
- Move the cursor to the bottom of the screen to get the taskbar to appear.
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Taskbar & Start Menu.
- Click Auto hide to uncheck it.
- Click OK.
Moving the Taskbar
- Place the cursor on any blank part of the taskbar.
- Press and hold the left mouse button and drag the task bar to where you want it. The task bar can reside on any one of the four edges of the screen.
- Release the left mouse button.
Resizing the Taskbar
- Place the cursor on the top border of the taskbar.
- Press and hold the left mouse button and drag the edge of the task bar to the size you want it.
Using Wallpaper for the Desktop
- Right-click any area of the desktop.
- Click Properties.
- Find the wallpaper you want. You may have to scroll through the list.
- Click on the selected wallpaper.
- Click OK.
Using a Pattern for the Desktop
- Right-click any area of the desktop.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Pattern button at the right of the drop-down window.
- Find the pattern you want. You may have to scroll through the list.
- Click on the selected pattern.
- Click OK.
Changing the Colors Windows Uses
- Right-click any area of the desktop.
- Click Properties.
- Click Appearance.
- Select the Scheme you want from the drop-down list.
- Click OK.
Using a Screen Saver
- Right-click any area of the desktop.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Screen Saver tab.
- Click the Screen Saver drop-down list box arrow to display the list.
- Select the Screen Saver you wish to use.
- Enter the number of minutes you want Windows to wait before it starts the screen saver in the Wait box.
- Click OK.
Changing How Your Monitor Works
- Right-click any area of the desktop.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Settings tab.
- To change the number of colors used in the display, click Colors and choose the number you want from the drop-down box.
- To change the resolution, click and drag the Screen area bar to the desired setting.
- Click OK.
Changing How the Desktop Icons Look
- Right-click any area of the desktop.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Effects tab.
- Select the Visual effects you want by checking or unchecking the appropriate boxes.
- Click the Change icon button.
- Click the icon you want to use.
- Click OK in the Change Icon dialog box.
- Click OK in the Display Properties dialog box.
Viewing the Desktop as a Web Page
- Right-click any area of the desktop.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Web tab.
- Check the View my Active Desktop as a web page check box.
- To display the channel bar, check the Internet Explorer Channel Bar check box.
- Click OK.
Working with Channels
- When the desktop is displayed as a web page, to view a channel, click it.

- Click Start.

- Double-click the Date/Time icon.
- Correct the date and time.

Changing How the Mouse Works
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.

- To switch the mouse buttons, click the Left-handed radio button.
- To change the double-click speed, click and drag the Double-click speed lever between Slow and Fast.
- Click the Motion tab to change the pointer speed or to leave a mouse trail.
- Adjust the pointer speed by dragging the Pointer speed lever between Slow and Fast.
- To show a pointer trail, check the Show pointer trails option check box and select the length of the trail by dragging the Pointer trail lever between
Short and Long.
Changing How the Mouse Pointers Look
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Mouse icon.
- Click the Pointers tab.
- Display the Scheme drop-down list and click the scheme that you wish to use.

Playing Sounds for Certain Windows Actions
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.

- Double-click the Sounds icon.
- Click the sound event you want to apply a sound to.
- Display the Name drop-down list to select the sound you want to assign.
- To hear a preview of the sound, click the Play button.
- Click OK.
Setting Up Windows for Multiple Users
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Users icon in the Control Panel which starts the multiple users wizard.
- Click Next.
- Enter the name of the person you are setting up.
- Click Next.
- If you want to use a password, enter it.
- Click Next.
- From the Items section select the items you want to save in this profile.
- Click Next.
- Click Finish.
Setting Up Windows for the Impaired
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Accessibility Options icon in the Control Panel which starts the multiple users wizard.
- Enable any keyboard features by checking the appropriate boxes.
- Click, the Sound tab.
- Click the visual warnings and/or captions for alert messages.
- Click the Display tab.
- Click if you want a high contrast display.
- Click the Mouse tab.
- Click if you want the numeric keypad to control the mouse.
- Click the General tab.

Adding Shortcuts
- Either in My Computer or Windows Explorer, click once on a file name to highlight it.
- With the cursor on the file name, press and hold the right mouse button and drag the file from the window to the desktop.
- Release the right mouse button.
- Click Create Shortcut(s) Here button from the shortcut menus that pops up.
Renaming Shortcuts
- Right-click the icon for the shortcut whose name you wish to change.
- Click Rename.
- Enter the new name and press Enter.
Deleting Shortcuts
- Right-click the icon for the shortcut that you wish to delete.
- Click Delete.
- Click Yes in the Delete File Delete pop-up box.
Adding Programs to the Start Menu
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Taskbar & Start Menu.
- Click Start Menu Programs tab.
- Click the Add button.
- Enter the command line for the program you want to add. If you don’t know the command line, click Browse and select the folder and
program name from the dialog box.
- Click Next.
- Select the folder where you want to place the program.
- Click Next.
- Enter a name for the shortcut in the text box or accept the default provided by Windows.
- Click Finish.
Deleting Programs from the Start Menu
- Click Start.
- Click Settings.
- Click Taskbar & Start Menu.

- Select the program you wish to remove.
- Click the Remove button.

Adding Folders to the Start Menu

Starting an Application When You Start Windows

Installing Windows Components
- Click Start.

Playing Games

Starting WordPad
- Click Start.

- Click WordPad. The menu bar, at the top of the screen, is used to select commands. The tool bars, just below the menu bar, are used for
frequently used commands.
Typing Text
- As you type text, WordPad automatically wraps the text to the next line so you don’t have to worry about the line running off the page.
- To start a new paragraph, press Enter.
Moving Around in a WordPad Document
- To insert text into a document, place the cursor to that point and click the mouse button.
- The arrow keys can also be used to move to an insertion point.
Adding Text
- To insert text into a document, place the cursor to that point and click the mouse button.
- As you type, the text to the right moves to make room for the added text.
Deleting Text
- Select the text you wish to delete. (You may need to refer to the method for selecting text, discussed in the first lesson).
- Press Delete.
Formatting Text
- Select the text you wish to format. (You may need to refer to the method for selecting text, discussed in the first lesson).
- Click the Font drop-down arrow. This arrow is to the right of the font box. The font box is not labeled, but placing the cursor on it shows “Font.”
- You may select a different font.
- To the right of the font drop-down arrow is the Font Size box. The font size box is not labeled, but placing the cursor on it shows “Font Size.”
- Additional text options on the font tool bar include bold, italic, underline, justification (left, center, right, and blocked), outline tools, insert and delete
line options, borders, and font color.
Saving the document
- It is a good idea to periodically save your document so that it doesn’t get deleted if the computer goes down or you shut it down without saving it.
- You may choose the name you wish to call it and the location to save it.
- To save the document, you can click File, and click Save As.
- If you wish to save it with the current name, you can click File and click Save or click the diskette icon on the tool bar.
Using Notepad
- Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click Notepad.
- Click File.
- Click Open.
- To look at the files in a different drive, click Look In.
- To exit NotePad, click the Close button.
Using Paint
- Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click Paint.
- Use the menu bar to select commands.
- Use the toolbox to select the drawing tools you wish to use.
- Use the color box to select a color.
Drawing a Shape
- Click the tool you wish to use.
- The toolbox displays options for the selected tool. Select the option you wish to use.
- Move the cursor to the drawing area.
- Click and drag to draw.
Adding Text to a Drawing
- Click the Text tool.
- Move the cursor to the drawing area.
- Click and drag to draw a text box.
- Type the desired text in the text box.
Drawing Freehand
- Click the Pencil tool.
- Move the cursor to the drawing area.
- Click and drag to draw.
Erasing Part of a Drawing
- Click the Eraser tool.
- In the tool box, click the size of eraser you wish to use if different from the default size.
- Move the cursor to the drawing area.
- Click and drag to erase.
Erase a selected part of a drawing
- Click the Select tool.
- Drag the mouse across the area to be erased.
- Press the Delete key to erase the selected area.
Erasing the entire page
- Click Image.
- Click Clear Image.
Adding Color to a Drawing Using the Brush Tool
- Click the Brush tool.
- Click the desired brush size and shape.
- Click the desired color in the color box.
- Hold the mouse button and drag the mouse across the page to paint.
Adding Color to a Drawing Using the Airbrush Tool
- Click the Airbrush tool.
- Click the desired splatter size.
- Click the desired color in the color box.
- Hold the mouse button and drag the mouse across the page to paint.
Adding Color to a Drawing Using the Fill with Color Tool
- Click the Fill with Color tool.
- Click the color you wish to use.
- Click in the area you want to fill in with the color.
Using Calculator
- Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click Calculator.
- To use a scientific calculator, click View, then click Scientific.
- Click the calculator buttons to do the math.
Playing a Sound with Sound Recorder
- Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click Entertainment.
- Click Sound Recorder.
- Click File menu.
- Click Open.
- Click Look In down arrow to get the drop-down list.
- Double-click a folder in the drop-down list that contains the desired sound file. (To listen to Windows sounds, click the Windows\Media folder).

Playing an Audio CD
- Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click Entertainment.

Changing the Volume
- Double-click the Speaker icon in the task bar at the bottom of the screen, or do the following:

- Drag volume control bars to desirable volume.
Playing a Media File
- Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click Entertainment.
- Click Media Player.
- Click File in the Media Player window.
- Click Open in the Media Player window.
- Double-click the Look in down arrow to get the drop-down box.
- Double-click a folder in the drop-down list that contains the desired media file. (To see to Windows media files, click the Windows\Media folder).
- Double-click the media file you wish to play.
- Click Play.
Maintaining Your System
Displaying Disk Information
- Double-click the My Computer icon.
- Right-click the disk you want information for.
- Click Properties.
- If desired, enter a new label for the disk.
- Click OK.
Scanning Your Disk for Errors
- Discuss how ScanDisk checks the disk for surface errors and corrects them.
- Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click System Tools.
- Click ScanDisk.
- Click the drive you wish to scan.
- Click either Standard test or Thorough test. The thorough test requires 4 times longer than the Standard test.
- Click whether you want ScanDisk to automatically correct errors.
- Click Start.
- Follow the instructions for handling any errors that are found.
Defragmenting a Disk
- Discuss how the Defragmenter rearranges parts of files.
- Double-click My Computer.
- Right-click the disk you wish to defragment.
- Click Properties.
- Click tools.
- Click the Defragment Now button.
- Click the Show Details button.
Cleaning Up Unnecessary Files
- Double-click My Computer.
- Right-click the disk you want to clean up.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Disk Cleanup button.
- Review the list of files to be removed and uncheck any you want to keep.
- Click the OK button.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Backing Up all Files on Your Computer
- Consider the need to back up files on a scheduled basis.
- Consider backup media (diskette, tape, hard drive, CD Rom burner).
- Backups and other tasks can be scheduled in Windows to start automatically, as described in “Scheduling Tasks,” described further
down in this document.
- Double-click My Computer.
- Click Backup. (The first time you run backup, you will be prompted to set up any backup devices on your system).
- Click Create a new backup job radio button.
- Click OK.
- Click Back up My Computer radio button.
- Click Next.
- Click whether you want to back up all files or only changed files.
- Click Next.
- Click the destination for the backup.
- Click Next.
- Click whether the back up files need to be compared and verified.
- Click whether the back up files need to be compressed.
- Click Next.
- Enter a name for the backup file.
- Click Start. (Backup progress will be displayed in the Backup Progress dialog box).
Backing Up Selected Files
- Double-click My Computer.
- Click Backup. (The first time you run backup, you will be prompted to set up any backup devices on your system).
- Click Create a new backup job radio button.
- Click OK.
- Select the Back up selected files, folders, and drives option.
- Click Next.
- Specify if you want to back up all files or only new and changed files.

- Select if backup file contents are to be compared and verified to the original file contents and if the backup file is to be compressed.
- Click Next.
- Enter a name for the group of backup files.

Restoring a Backup
- Discuss the fact that backup files are stored in a special format and must be restored and not copied from the backup media.
- Double-click My Computer.
- Click Backup. (The first time you run backup, you will be prompted to set up any backup devices on your system).
- Click Restore backed up files radio button.
- Click OK.
- Indicate the source of the backup files that are to be restored.
- Click Next.
- Select which backup file group you want to restore.
- Click OK.
- Check the items that you want restored.
- Click Next.
- Indicate the location on your disk where you want the backup files to be restored.
- Click Next.
- Select how the restored files should be handled.
- Click Start.
Formatting a Disk
- Discuss that formatting prepares a disk or diskette so that files can be placed on the computer. All existing files stored on the disk or diskette are lost.
- Discuss the difference between information that is lost because the directory is changed versus information that is lost because each file is erased.
- Discuss the difference between the file directory on the disk and the files stored on it.
- Note that a hard disk is to be reformatted only in extreme cases because all data is lost.
- Insert a floppy disk into the floppy disk drive.
- Double-click My Computer.
- Right-click the floppy disk drive.
- Click Format.
- If desired, change the Capacity of the diskette.
- If desired, change the Format type of the diskette.
- If desired, change the default diskette label to one that you choose.
- Click Start.
- When the format is complete, click the Close button twice.
Creating a Startup Disk
- Mention that the diskette used for the Startup will have all existing information lost.
- Double-click My Computer.
- Right-click the floppy disk drive.
- Click Format.
- Check the Copy system files only check box.
- Click Start.
- When the format is complete, click the Close button twice.
Scheduling Tasks
- If there is a Scheduled Tasks icon at the bottom of the screen, you can double-click it to display the Scheduled Task list, otherwise, Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click System Tools.
- Click Scheduled Tasks.
- Double-click Add Scheduled Task.
- Click Next.
- Click the name of the program you want Windows to be scheduled to run.
- Click Next.
- If desired, enter a new name for this scheduled task.
- Click how often you want this task to run.
- Click Next.
- Depending on the frequency of task execution, you may have to enter the time and date to start the task.
- Click Finish.
- Click Close.
Unscheduling Tasks
- If there is a Scheduled Tasks icon at the bottom of the screen, you can double-click it to display the Scheduled Task list, otherwise, Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click System Tools.
- Click Scheduled Tasks.
- Right-click the task you wish to delete.
- Click Delete.
- Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the task.
Modify a Scheduled Task
- If there is a Scheduled Tasks icon at the bottom of the screen, you can double-click it to display the Scheduled Task list, otherwise, Click Start.
- Click Programs.
- Click Accessories.
- Click System Tools.
- Click Scheduled Tasks.
- Right-click the task for the schedule you wish to modify.
- Click Properties.
- Click on the tabs of the items in the schedule that you want to change.

Setting Up for the Internet

- Note that the yellow pages contain a list of ISPs.
- Note that with many ISPs, these instructions are not required because when you set up the ISP, it takes care of automatically
entering most of the below items.
- Click Start.

- If you already have an existing internet account with an ISP, click the appropriate radio button.
- Click Next.
- Indicate how you wish to be connected: through a phone line or through a Local Area Network (LAN).

- Choose whether you want to establish a new dial up connection or use an existing one.
- Click Next.
- Enter your user name and password assigned to you by your ISP.

- Select Yes if you wish to set up an internet mail account.

Starting Internet Explorer

- Enter your user name and password.

- If you want to go to a specific web page, enter the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of that page. If you wish to search the web for
information on a subject, you can enter the URL of one of the search engines such as http://www.yahoo.com, http://www.google.com, etc.
- Press enter.

- To return to the previous page, you can click the back button in the tool bar at the top of the screen.
- To go to the next page, you can click the forward button in the tool bar at the top of the screen.
- To return to the start page, click the Home button.
Adding a Site to Your Favorites List
- Most browsers allow you to set up a list of favorite locations so that you don’t have to enter the URL each time you want to visit them.
- When you are in the web site that you want to place in your favorites list, click Favorites in the menu bar.
- Click Add to Favorites.
- If you wish, you may change the name of the favorite page if you don’t like the default name.
- Click OK.
Going to a Site in Your Favorites List
- Click the Favorites button in the tool bar at the top of the screen.
- Click the site that you want to go to.
Rearranging Your Favorites List
- Click the Favorites button in the tool bar at the top of the screen.
- Click Organize Favorites.
- If you wish to create a new folder, click the New Folder button.
- Enter the name of the new folder.
- Press Enter.
- To move a favorite site to a different folder, click on the site.
- Click the Move button.
- Click on the folder you want to move the favorite site to.
- Click OK.
Delete a Site from your Favorites List
- Click the Favorites button in the tool bar at the top of the screen.
- To delete a favorite site, click on the site.
- Click the Delete button.
- Click Yes to confirm that you wish to delete the site.
- Click OK.
Rename a Site on your Favorites List
- Click the Favorites button in the tool bar at the top of the screen.
- To rename a favorite site, click on the site.
- Click the Rename button.
- Enter the new name for the site.
- Click Enter.
Reviewing Web Channels

Searching the Internet
- Click the Search button in the tool bar at the top of the screen.

- If you wish to change to a different search engine (content provider), click the Choose provider drop-down list and click on the provider you wish to use.
Setting Internet Security Levels
- Security is set up by zone. You may assign different zones to various sites.
- To see information about a zone or to change the security settings of a zone, click View.
- Click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab in the Internet Options box.
- To set zone security, click the zone in the Zone drop-down box.
- Click the level of security desired: High, Medium, Low, or Custom in the Internet zone window.
Adding a Web Site to a Zone
- Click View.
- Click Internet Options.

- Enter the URL address of the site you wish to add to the zone.

Removing a Web Site from a Zone
- Click View.

Subscribing to Newsgroups
- In Outlook Express folders, click your news server.
- Click the News groups button.
- Enter the name of a topic that is of interest to you such as golf.
- Click a newsgroup from the list that is displayed as a result of your golf entry.
- Click the Subscribe button.
- Click OK.
Unsubscribing from Newsgroups
- In Outlook Express folders, click your news server.
- Click the News groups button.
- Click the name of the newsgroup to which you wish to unsubscribe.
- Click the Unsubscribe button.
- Click OK.

- In Outlook Express folders, double-click the newsgroup you wish to see.
- Double-click the message you wish to read.
Posting New Messages to a Newsgroup

- Enter a subject of your message in the subject box.
