IC Characteristics in relation to Feature Size Generation at the time of this writing are as follows:



The following results occur each time the feature size changes one generation.
  • The number of transistors on a chip (now in the billions) goes up by a factor of two.
  • The processing speed of the chip (now in the millions of instructions per second (MIPS)) increases by a factor of 1.4.
  • Data throughput goes up by a factor of 2.8.
